RuPay Credit Card UPI Charges Above ₹2,000

Last updated 26 September 2026

When a customer pays with a RuPay credit card through UPI, the merchant pays a card-style MDR, which is usually much higher than the new 0.4% UPI rate. The customer pays nothing extra.

Different rules from regular UPI

The new UPI MDR starting 15 October 2026 (0.4%, capped at ₹300) applies to payments from bank accounts. The official government FAQ says RuPay credit cards linked to UPI follow standard credit card guidelines instead. That means each bank sets its MDR by merchant category, with no ₹300 cap.

Example rates: Canara Bank

Canara Bank has published indicative MDR rates for RuPay credit card payments on UPI above ₹2,000, effective 1 June 2026. Other banks and payment apps use similar category-based rates, but the exact numbers vary. The example column shows the total deduction on a ₹5,000 payment, including 18% GST.
